How to Apply a Fragrance

Wearing a fragrance is an important detail that men should not overlook. A scent not only adds a final touch to your outfit but leaves a lasting impression. And who doesn’t want to make a good impression? But the key is learning how to properly apply a fragrance.

If you need a refresher on fragrances, on things such as what’s the difference between eau de parfum and eau de cologne read our blog on Fragrance 101.

When shopping for a new fragrance, I highly recommend you consider fragrances that are not by designer brands but by niche perfumers. Designer fragrances tend to be mass-produced where niche perfumers tend to use higher quality ingredients.

The best place to store a fragrance is your bedroom closet. Avoid sunlight and avoid bathrooms because of the heat fluctuations, which cause the molecules in a fragrance to break apart.

So let’s get to the DOs and DON’Ts of how to apply a fragrance:

  1. DO apply a fragrance on dry skin, preferably right after a shower.
  2. DO apply on heat areas such as chest, neck, wrist, forearm or inner elbow. DO NOT spray on all these areas at the same time. Start with one and then as you learn the scent, spray 2 or 3 other spots.
  3. DO re-apply if needed but only at the end of the day or evening.
  4. DO spray a fragrance 3 to 6 inches from your skin and remember that less is more.
  5. DO NOT rub a fragrance into your skin. It breaks the molecular bond, making the scent weaker.
  6. DO NOT spray a fragrance in the air and walk through the mist. This is a waste of fragrance.
  7. DO NOT spray a fragrance on your clothes because the scent isn’t allowed to mix with your oils and may even stain your clothes.

I hope you found these tips on how to apply a fragrance useful. At Gentil Uomo, we proudly carry two exceptional lines of fragrances by niche perfumers: Acqua Dell’Elba, from the island of Elba in Tuscany, and Acca Kappa, from Treviso, near Venice. Both lines are on our e-store.

Alla prossima – until next time. Arrivederci.
