Men’s Belts

One accessory that a man should not overlook is a belt. Belts not only serve a functional purpose but they are an essential accessory that can complete your look. So let’s take a look at belts from material, sizing and matching.

In general, you should wear a belt with all pants (including jeans) that have belt loops. The one exception is a tuxedo. Chances are your tuxedo pants don’t have belt loops but if they do, have them removed by a tailor. Your tuxedo pants should have a strong waistband that fits securely around your waist, so there really isn’t a need for a belt.

Material

Leather is the best material for classic belts because leather ages well and is more resistant and does not stretch. You can also look at leather belts that are decorated by ‘tooling’ – a stamping process that leaves patterns on the leather.

For a more casual look, especially with casual summer outfits, you can wear twill cotton or woven fabric belts.

Metal Finish

Belt buckles traditionally come in silver, gold and brass. Opt for a simple buckle like a frame-style or box-frame.

Size

Belt sizes come in inches or centimeters. This number corresponds to the length of the strap – measured from the buckle to the third hole – which is where it should be fastened. The general rule for measuring a belt size is to take your pant size and add 2 inches. For example, if you wear a size 34 pant, you should wear a size 36 belt. Remember, a belt should go from right to left, with the end of the belt ending on the left side of the zipper.

Measurement

The width of the belt strap is usually between 1-1.5 inches for formal belts and a bit wider 1.5-1.75 inches for casual belts.

Matching

The most traditional colours for formal belts are black, brown and tan. A simple way to remember how to match is to match the belt leather to your shoe leather, and your belt metal to your jewellery, such as a watch, bracelet or cufflinks.

One decision to make when choosing a belt is will the belt be an accent piece or a centrerpiece? An accent piece is subtle and complements the rest of your outfit. A centerpiece draws attention and contrasts with the rest of your outfit. For example, for a smart casual look, wear a red belt with white, blue or tan pants.
