If you’re a Seinfeld fan you’ll likely remember the episode where Elaine gives Jerry a “European carryall” which was a small leather bag. That episode aired in 1998 and was quite funny and now 20 years later we see more men carrying all types of bags. And not only is it appropriate for men to carry a bag, it’s become essential.

For decades it was common for men to carry a briefcase to the office but that was really the only time you saw men carrying any type of bag. I still have the briefcase my parents bought me when I graduated from university. And in the 1980s the fanny pack came along and men started wearing them around their waists mainly when they were on vacation. And guess what? The hip bag or belt bag, as they are now called, has made a comeback but, of course, with a modern twist.

Today there are many types of bags available to men that are stylish and multi-purpose. And men should own more than one bag because you have different needs. A small duffle bag is perfect for going to the gym but don’t use the same duffle bag as a weekender because you need a larger bag for travel and definitely one that is better constructed and stylish, perhaps leather.

For everyday use you have many options depending on your needs. You can go hands-free with a messenger bag or crossbody bag. Depending on the size these are great to carry your keys, wallet, smartphone and tablet or laptop and you can wear the strap across your body or sling it over your shoulder. Depending on your profession a modern leather briefcase is ideal because you can carry everything you need for work and you can carry it by hand or use the shoulder strap.

For evening or weekend outings don’t hesitate to carry a clutch or pouch because these are perfect to carry your keys, wallet, smartphone and sunglasses. Please don’t stuff your pant pockets! Not cool at all.
