A watch is the staple of men’s jewellery and today there is no shortage of styles to choose from. Even if you’re not one to wear a lot of jewellery, chances are you wear a watch. And as with any fashion accessory you wear there are tips on how to wear a watch with style.
The first thing to consider when wearing a watch is the fit. Make sure your watch isn’t too loose that it slides around too much or too tight as it will be uncomfortable to wear. You should also consider the size of the watch case and wear a size that is appropriate for your wrist size. Men’s watches usually range from 38mm to 46mm so if you have a small wrist wear a smaller watch and if you have a large wrist wear a larger watch.
As a general rule, the simpler the watch the more appropriate it is for all occasions. A metal watch band is generally suitable for casual wear while a leather band is proper for business or social occasions. A good idea is to pair a watch with your outfit – sport watches with athletic wear, dress watches with business wear.
When it comes to matching a watch to your outfit, match the metal of the watch case to your belt buckle, wedding ring or cufflinks. With a leather band match the leather of the band to your belt or shoes. For day time consider wearing a lighter coloured watch face such as white or ivory while at night focus on a darker watch face such as black, grey or brown.
Don’t shy away from introducing colour to your watch collection. When wearing band colours such as red, green or blue you have a couple of options on how to match with your outfit. You can match the watch band to a colour in your outfit. For example, a blue watch band with a blue shirt. Or match complementary colours such as a green watch band with a red tie.
A watch not only tells time but it’s a fashion accessory, so you should own more than one watch. Depending on your budget, you can slowly build your collection to include a dress watch with a black leather band and one with a brown leather band. Also add a casual watch with a metal band, and a sports watch with a gel or rubber band.
