Wedding season is upon us. It’s an exciting time to gather with family and friends to celebrate a couple’s nuptials. If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to a wedding, you may need a little refresh on what to wear.

First of all, if the couple has included a dress code on their invitation, it’s a sign of respect to adhere to that dress code. If no dress code is indicated, then let’s review your options.

You can’t go wrong with wearing a suit. Since a wedding is traditionally a more formal event, you can wear a black or navy blue suit; however, a grey or charcoal suit is a great option as well.

This is an easy one. Wear a collared shirt. Since it’s a wedding, opt to wear a crisp white shirt. It will look great with a black, navy or grey suit. You could also consider wearing a French cuff shirt to elevate your formal look, but don’t forget to buy cufflinks.

For neckwear, you have a few possibilities. You can wear a traditional tie or bow-tie. With a white shirt, you can easily select a tie or bow-tie colour that will complement your suit colour, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of colour.

Another option for neckwear is an ascot. An ascot is a cross between a tie and a scarf. You wear it around your neck like a tie but it’s tucked into your shirt leaving the top button opened.

For your jacket, you can accessorize with a silk pocket square or silk boutonniere. Either will add a pop of colour to your look and add a finishing touch to your attire. With a pocket square, you can easily match it to your suit and neckwear. Just make sure you’re not introducing too many patterns or colours. With a boutonniere opt for a solid colour that will complement the colour of your neckwear.

As for dress socks, you can be a little playful with the pattern or colour, but a general rule is to match your socks to your pants.

For dress shoes, wear black shoes with a black suit. With blue or grey suits, you have the option of wearing either black or brown shoes. Remember to match your belt colour to your dress shoes.
