Over the years, men’s socks have become a fashion accessory that gives men the opportunity to step up their style. With that in mind, I thought I’d share some style tips on how to properly wear socks, so you can always put your best foot forward.
First off, let me get this one out of the way right off the top. Save your white athletic socks for when you’re wearing running shoes or working out. That’s the only time you should wear white socks.
Okay, now that we’re done with that, let’s talk about the sockless look. I don’t recommend not wearing socks with shoes. When wearing loafers or low-top sneakers, no-show socks are the way to go. You can look as if you’re not wearing socks, but more importantly, your feet will be comfortable and dry. And the silicon grips on the heels help keep the socks in place.
With dress socks, you have many style options to consider. If you’re in a more traditional setting, and don’t want to stand out, keep it safe by wearing solid black, brown or navy socks. Simply match the sock colour to your pant colour. But even with solid colour socks you can still play with texture like choosing a ribbed sock.
On the other hand, if you want to step up from traditional solid colours, try stripes, polka dots or argyle patterned socks. All three of these patterns are timeless and make for easy matching. Just remember to avoid matching the pattern of your socks with a pattern that already exists in your outfit. For example, if you’re wearing a polka dot shirt, avoid dotted socks.
When it comes to colour matching, a good rule is to mirror your sock color with another color that you’re wearing above the waistline such as a tie or pocket square.
And finally, novelty or fun socks can add a pop of playful style to your look and show off your personality – if done right. Also, if you choose to wear novelty socks, tone down other aspects of your outfit.
