Healthy Skin

Did you know that skin is our largest organ? Skin accounts for about 16 percent of our total body weight and covers a surface area of approximately two square meters. So, skin really is a big deal!

Skin has three main functions: protection, regulation and sensation. Let’s briefly examine the roles of each:

Protection – skin acts as a barrier to protect us from external factors such as bacteria, chemicals and ultraviolet radiation.

Regulation – skin also controls our body temperature through blood circulation and sweating.

Sensation – skin, through our nerves, helps us sense heat, cold and pain.

Now, knowing just important skin is, you have even more reason to want to take care of it. Here are some things you can do to have healthier, younger skin:

Stay hydrated. If your skin doesn’t get enough water, not only will it become dry, tight, and flaky, but it will also become even more prone to aging.

Eat more antioxidant-rich foods and avoid a diet of processed foods and refined sugars.

Use a cleanser on your face at least once a day as it removes dirt, dry skin, and helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Exfoliate your face at least once a week as this removes dead skin cells and also helps with ingrown hairs and bumps.

Moisturize your face daily as it hydrates your facial skin.

Use sunscreen everyday – even in the winter. To save a step, you could use a moisturizer that has SPF.

Use body wash or soap when you shower or bathe. Try using a wash cloth or loofah as this helps remove dry skin.

Use a body lotion after you shower or bathe if you have dry skin, especially on your elbows, knees and feet.
