What’s so Special about Italian Shirts?

I’m often asked what’s so special about Italian dress shirts and why are they more expensive than regular dress shirts. I can understand why people ask. I mean isn’t a $49 shirt the same as a $199 shirt? Short answer. No, it’s not. A higher quality dress shirt is just that higher quality. And what goes into making a premium dress shirt isn’t as simple as one may think. There are so many details to consider.

Men’s Neckwear

I have a confession to make. I love wearing ties and bow-ties. I know some of you may think I’m crazy but I think a man looks more fashionable and complete when wearing neckwear. I’m sure some of you wear a tie to the office every day while others only wear a tie to weddings or other special occasions. And that’s ok. But I wanted to share some thoughts on the types of neckwear available and give you options on when and how to wear neckwear.

How to Coordinate Your Wardrobe

If you’ve ever found yourself standing in front of your closet gazing from left to right trying to figure out “what goes together,” don’t worry, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. I have some simple guidelines to help you coordinate your clothing so you can get on with your day and look sharp.

Let’s start with suit colours. The three basic suit colours that you should have in your closet are blue, grey and black. However, reserve black for more formal occasions and not for 9 to 5. With blue and grey you should also consider various shades from light to dark as this will give you more options to wear throughout the year – lighter shades for spring/summer and darker shades for fall/winter. If you’re wearing a suit a general rule that will help you better coordinate an outfit is for one of the three basic pieces (suit, shirt and tie) to be plain or solid.

Montegrappa Pens

“The pen is mightier than the keyboard.”

In today’s age of smartphones and texting, some say that the art of handwriting has died but I disagree. Sending someone a handwritten thank-you note or a birthday card, which I do very often rather than a simple text or email (even with emojis added) will show that you really took the time to acknowledge the person and that will go a long way in your relationship.

When I was a little boy it drove me crazy when my Italian mother would force me to wear a hat and scarf in the winter. I’m sure every little boy hated being strapped into his winter gear before heading out to play street hockey with his friends. Now that I’m a grown man I still hate having to wear so much when I head out in the winter but the bonus is that men have so much great fashion to choose from so it makes going out in the winter a little more bearable. One of the accessories I love to wear from fall to spring is a scarf.

While most men wear scarves to stay warm during cold days, scarves are also considered fashion accessories that can add flare to a coat or jacket. In winter months, wool or cashmere scarves are most common because they keep you warm and you can find them in a variety of great colours and patterns. The last few years, infinity scarves have been popular for men. If you’re not familiar with an infinity scarf, it is a large, closed loop scarf, usually made of wool. One advantage of an infinity scarf is that it always stays in place.

Why the Distillery District?

I’m often asked why I choose the Distillery District as the location for Gentil Uomo. When I knew I wanted to open a boutique that specializes in men’s shirts and accessories made in Italy, I knew I had to find the perfect location to really bring to life the atmosphere of an Italian specialty shop.

When I first visited the Distillery District in 2007, I knew I had found my location. I was instantly transported back to a piazza in Italy. If you’ve never visited the Distillery District, it is a pedestrian-only village filled with unique shops, restaurants, cafes and galleries http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com all housed in the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian industrial architecture in North America.

Fragrance 101

It’s really easy to get confused by all the different types of men’s fragrances out there. In fact, today we tend to use the term “cologne” to mean men’s fragrance but cologne was actually named after a perfume originating from Cologne, Germany in 1709 by an Italian perfume maker named Giovanni Maria Farina. He was the first to coin the term eau de cologne.

So let’s begin with some basics. Cologne is made of extracts, oils, alcohol, preservatives and water. As the percentage of aromatic compounds increases so does the intensity and longevity of the cologne. First, we have perfume or parfum which is usually over 20% of aromatic compounds and it’s also the most expensive. Next, we have eau de perfume or parfum and it’s usually 10-20%. Eau de toilette is typically 7-12% of aromatic compounds followed by eau de cologne which is commonly 3-7%. The key here is the less percentage of aromatic compounds cologne has, the less potent and expensive it will be.
